Assistance League of Wichita received gifts from two community partners to support students’ health through Operation School Bell®. Capitol Federal employees donated 766 hygiene kits that they collected through a kit drive at the bank branches. Each kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, a bar of soap and deodorant. The Capitol Federal Foundation presented a matching gift of $2,328 to Operation School Bell. The Small Smiles Dental Clinic also donated 3,000 toothbrushes to be distributed to children through the Assistance League’s Operation School Bell. Operation School Bell provides new clothing and uniforms, coats, book bags and grooming kits for students.

Assistance League of Wichita volunteers accepted the 2010 Friends of Education Award of Excellence in the partner activity category, during the Friends of Education banquet on April 10 at El Dorado High School. The Friends of Education Awards, presented by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force, recognize the outstanding work of dedicated school volunteers across the state. Three of the Assistance League of Wichita’s programs benefit Wichita students and graduates:
  • Operation School Bell® helps underprivileged children be better prepared for learning by providing them new clothing, shoes, and school supplies. Operation School Bell clothed 3,584 students last school year and has provided clothing and hygiene kits to 59,000 children so far.
  • The Assistance League’s Bear Hugs program provides bears to children who are victims of sexual assault.
  • The Assistance League’s Scholarship program provides graduating high school seniors the opportunity to further their education.
The Friends of Education Awards Banquet is sponsored by the South Central Kansas School Public Relations Association (KanSPRA).
